Season 2 is where Sonic X goes back to the games. Six months after Super Sonic’s debut, more of Sonic’s world spills onto Earth, and the next twelve episodes retell the two Dreamcast adventures: Chaos, Tikal, Big and E-102 Gamma in the Sonic Adventure arc (27–32), then Shadow, Maria, Gerald Robotnik and the Space Colony ARK in the Sonic Adventure 2 arc (33–38).
The second half belongs to the show again. The Chaotix and Cream’s mother Vanilla arrive, Eggman parks a rebuilt Moon in front of the Sun, a robot called Emerl wins a fighting tournament straight out of Sonic Battle, and the heroes chase Eggman to a lost continent full of giant monsters. Then scientists discover that the two worlds are merging, and the season ends with the story Sonic X had been building to all along: Chris saying goodbye.
In Japan the season followed straight on from Season 1, running on TV Tokyo until March 2004; episode 52 was the last to air there for sixteen years. 4Kids’ English version followed between September 2004 and March 2005.

Quick Answers
How many episodes are in Sonic X Season 2?
Twenty-six: episodes 27 to 52. Japan had no season break – TV Tokyo simply carried on from episode 26 – so “Season 2” is the 4Kids English numbering. 4Kids’ DVD saga sets split it in two: Chaos & Shadow Sagas (27–38) and The Egg Moon, Emerl & Homebound Sagas (39–52).
Count all 52 Japanese TV episodes together and you get the “Series 1” that Japanese sources refer to; the remaining 26 are Season 3.
When did Season 2 air?
Japan: TV Tokyo, 5 October 2003 to 28 March 2004. US: 4Kids’ version premiered on Fox Box on 18 September 2004 and finished on 26 March 2005, by which time the block had been renamed 4Kids TV. There was a five-week gap after episode 40 (18 December 2004 to 22 January 2005), and episodes 48–49 and 50–51 went out as double bills.
Which episodes are based on the games?
Episodes 27–32 adapt Sonic Adventure and 33–38 adapt Sonic Adventure 2. Episodes 42–46 bring in Emerl from Sonic Battle, with the two-part tournament in 45–46. See From Game to Anime.
What happens to Shadow?
He sacrifices himself to stop the Space Colony ARK in episode 38, just as in Sonic Adventure 2 – and, as in the games, it isn’t the end of him. He returns in Season 3.
Where can I watch Season 2?
The full English dub is on TMS Entertainment’s official Anime! on TMS YouTube channel, embedded on each of our episode pages, and on Discotek Media’s DVD and Blu-ray sets.

From Game to Anime
Season 2 retells Sonic Team’s two Dreamcast adventures in condensed form, keeping their big set pieces while working in Chris and the human cast. Here is how the anime lines up with the games.
| In the game | In Sonic X |
|---|---|
| Sonic Adventure (1998): Eggman frees Chaos from the Master Emerald | Eggman unleashes Chaos in “Pure Chaos”; Knuckles hunts the shards across episodes 27–30. |
| Big the Cat searches for Froggy | Big arrives on Earth and enlists Chris to find Froggy (27–30). |
| E-102 Gamma turns on Eggman and frees his brothers | “A Robot Rebels” and “Revenge of the Robot” (29–31), with Amy’s bird friend Lily. |
| Tails stops Eggman’s missile | Tails’ solo triumph in “Heads Up, Tails!” (30). |
| Tikal and Chaos’ past | Knuckles’ and Sonic’s visions of Pachacamac’s tribe (28–32). |
| Super Sonic vs Perfect Chaos in Station Square | “Flood Fight” (32). |
| Sonic Adventure 2 (2001): Eggman awakens Shadow | “Project: Shadow” (33). |
| Sonic framed and taken to Prison Island | “Shadow Knows” and “Sonic’s Big Break” (34–35). |
| The Eclipse Cannon fires on the Moon | “Shadow World” (36). |
| Gerald’s revenge, Maria and the Biolizard | “Robotnik’s Revenge” and “Showdown in Space” (37–38), scored with “Live & Learn”. |
| Sonic Battle (2003): Emerl learns by copying fighters | Emerl’s story (42–46) and the tournament in “Prize Fights” and “A Wild Win”. |
| Sonic Heroes (2003): the Chaotix return | Vector, Espio and Charmy arrive in “Defective Detectives” (39). |
The anime changes plenty along the way: Chris tags along to the ARK, a human reporter and Mr. Stewart investigate Project Shadow from the ground… but the story beats, and the endings, are the games’.

Japan vs 4Kids: Season 2 Dub Differences
- New titles and music, as in Season 1: every episode was renamed, and 4Kids’ own score replaced the Japanese music – including the game tracks the original weaves in.
- Endings. Japan switched its closing song from “Hikaru Michi” to “T.O.P” by KP at episode 40; the English version kept “Gotta Go Fast” throughout.
- Episode 52. The original Japanese broadcast used two Off Course songs as inserts; Japanese home video replaced them with “Hikaru Michi” and Sonic Adventure 2’s “Event: The Last Scene”, and the 4Kids version has its own score.
- Content edits follow the same rules as Season 1 – alcohol, coarse language, fourth-wall jokes and suggestive material trimmed or rewritten for Fox.
- Scheduling. The US run took a five-week break over the 2004 holidays, and finished with two double bills in March 2005.
