Six months after Sonic’s return home – and six years after Chris last saw him – Sonic X leaves Earth behind for a space opera. The Metarex, an army of robots led by the mysterious Dark Oak, are stealing the Planet Eggs that keep worlds alive, and a gentle plant-like girl named Cosmo, whose home the Metarex destroyed, falls from the sky to ask Sonic for help.

So Tails builds a starship, the Blue Typhoon, Chris builds a portal and arrives twelve years old again, and the crew sets off across the galaxy to recover the scattered Chaos Emeralds. Eggman, Rouge and a resurrected Shadow follow in the Crimson Egg with their own agenda, and the Chaotix keep turning up for comic relief. Underneath the planet-of-the-week adventures runs a slow-burning story – Tails and Cosmo’s friendship, Cosmo’s secret, and Shadow’s return – that ends in what Nintendo Life called an “emotional finale”.

This season has an unusual history. It was never shown on Japanese TV at the time: French viewers saw it first in spring 2005, 4Kids TV in the US from September 2005, and Japan only in 2020, when Kids Station aired it to tie in with the Sonic the Hedgehog film.

  • 26episodes, the Metarex Saga
  • 3countries’ premieres spread over 15 years: France 2005, US 2005–2006, Japan 2020
  • 12scripts by Kiyoko Yoshimura, including the last three
  • 4Metarex commanders: Pale Bayleaf, Black Narcissus, Yellow Zelkova and Red Pine
  • 2endings for Shadow: presumed dead in the 4Kids dub, alive in the Japanese version of the finale

Quick Answers

How many episodes are in Sonic X Season 3?

Twenty-six: episodes 53 to 78, the end of the series. Japanese sources call them “Series 2”, after the 52-episode “Series 1” that aired on TV Tokyo; 4Kids called them Season 3. On US DVD they were split into The Complete 5th Season (53–65) and So Long, Sonic (66–78), so you may also see them counted as seasons 5 and 6.

Did Season 3 air in Japan?

Not at the time. The episodes were made and offered through rental and streaming services, but TV Tokyo never broadcast them, and they were not released on Japanese DVD. Japanese TV finally showed them on Kids Station from 25 March to 30 April 2020, as part of the promotion for the Sonic the Hedgehog film.

Where did it premiere?

France, from 12 March 2005 according to Wikipedia’s episode list, ahead of the US premiere on 4Kids TV on 10 September 2005. The US run paused for two months after episode 65 and ended on 6 May 2006.

Who is Cosmo?

A plant-like girl from a world the Metarex destroyed, who joins the Blue Typhoon’s crew and becomes close to Tails. See the cast on the series page.

Where can I watch Season 3?

The full English dub is on TMS Entertainment’s official Anime! on TMS YouTube channel, embedded on each of our episode pages; Discotek Media’s Sonic X Collection 2 DVDs and the complete-series Blu-rays have it too, and the 2023 Blu-ray includes the Japanese version with subtitles.

Japan vs 4Kids: Season 3 Dub Differences

What changed in the English version
  • Names. Several planets, ships and weapons have different names in the two versions: the water world Hydo is Secco in the dub, the ice planet Breezer is Breezy, the warship Hellship is Scarship, the Blue Typhoon’s Sonic Driver is the Sonic Power Cannon, and the galactic corridor becomes the “Intergalactic Cloister”.
  • Titles and music were replaced as in the earlier seasons; the Japanese version kept “Sonic Drive” and brought back “Hikaru Michi” as its ending.
  • Content edits follow the same Fox standards as in the earlier seasons.
  • The finale. The 4Kids version of “So Long Sonic” drops almost four minutes of opening scenes and leaves Shadow presumed dead; only the Japanese (and French) version shows him alive near the end, laying a rose on Molly’s grave.
  • Air order. Unusually, the English-speaking world saw these episodes before Japanese TV did – by almost fifteen years.

Sources: Wikipedia (Japanese-version names in its episode list and character list) compared with 4Kids’ official English episode descriptions as used on TMS’s YouTube uploads and Sonic Wiki Zone. The finale changes come from Sonic Wiki Zone’s “So Long Sonic” and “Shadow the Hedgehog (Sonic X)” pages; other scene-level edits listed only by fan wikis are not repeated here.
