The Chaos Emerald saga starts with a kidnapping. Robotnik forces Professor Caninestein to construct a time machine for him, so that he can gather four Chaos Emeralds scattered through history – the gems of invisibility, invincibility, immortality and life itself – and rule first Mobius, then the universe. Scratch takes the first trip by accident and comes home from the Pilgrims’ dinner table roasted.

Caninestein escapes to warn Sonic and Tails and kits Sonic out with his Atomic Relativity Boots. Their first stop is a pirate ship, where Robotnik’s transmogrifier ray has already turned Blackbeard into the robot Black Bot, treasure map in hand. Tails is made to walk the plank, a robot whale swallows them both, and Sonic rewires the whale from the inside to get them ashore on Shark Island.

Sonic burrows to the buried chest first, only for it to look empty: the Emerald of Invisibility is, of course, invisible. The doctor snatches it, shreds Sonic’s boots and strands the heroes in the past, but a note left in the chest brings a fresh pair from Caninestein, and Sonic catches up with Robotnik in the time stream and takes the emerald home.
