After yet another failed mission, Sonic wishes they could go back and stop Robotnik before he ever took over. Dulcy knows how: the Time Stones, kept on the Floating Island. Sonic and Sally fly there, meet the stones’ Keeper and learn the catch. To travel through time, both of them have to picture exactly the same moment.

Sally pictures the fountain outside the palace, in the year 3224. Sonic’s mind wanders to chili dogs. They land in a gleaming, peaceful Mobotropolis where even the SWATbots wish passers-by a nice day, on the eve of the takeover, and meet Sonic’s Uncle Chuck as he used to be – and their own younger selves.

With Chuck’s help they warn the King that his Warlord, Julian, is planning a coup. The King wants proof, until he looks into Sally’s eyes, sees the royal signet ring and hears her recite the family creed. By then it is too late: SWATbots storm the throne room, the Destroyer tears down the palace walls, and Julian steps out to welcome everyone to Robotropolis.

Sonic and Sally try to stop Robotnik as he begins his takeover. Not only must they stop Robotnik, but they must also save their past selves from being Roboticized, and stop his massive flying fortress from destroying the Great Forest and Knothole Village’s future location. Can they save themselves and their futures?
