Synopsis

Dr. Robotnik is back in Robotropolis and hungry for any trace of Sonic, so he sends the Buzz Bomber Bomber-One after young Tails while the fox picks flowers in the Great Forest. Sonic, busy showing Rotor a new guitar riff he hopes will impress Sally, races to the rescue and leaves the robot wrecked by its own laser.

Back in Knothole, Sally’s catapult defences keep failing because their wooden cotter pins snap, so she sends Sonic into Robotropolis for metal ones – and, reluctantly, he takes Tails along in his backpack. In the junk heaps Sonic finds his old dog Muttski, now a vicious robot guard dog, and from an air duct the pair overhear Robotnik’s plan: Buzz Bombers will spray a defoliant over the forest to strip away Knothole’s cover.

A Power Ring gets them home in time. With the catapults repaired, Sonic acts as bait, tricks the Hedgehog Missile into the bombers carrying the chemical tanks and leads the rest of the swarm into range, where volleys of water balloons short-circuit them. The Buzz Bombers flee, and a furious Robotnik takes it out on Snively.

Heads or Tails is the first episode of SatAM, and centers on the latest plot of the tyrannical dictator, Doctor Robotnik: spray a lethal chemical into the Great Forest to kill all the trees, expose Knothole Village, and allow him to capture the Freedom Fighters that reside there. Sonic the Hedgehog, Princess Sally, and the other Freedom Fighters quickly form a plan to use makeshift catapults and trebuchets to destroy Robotnik’s Buzz-Bomber robots as they deliver the chemicals towards the trees, but their range is limited, and they are not strong enough to hold the weight of large boulders they have stashed. Sonic takes his best friend Tails on a mission with him into Robotropolis to steal some cotter pins from his factories. After a narrow escape, Sonic returns to Knothole Village and hands the cotter pins to his friends. They get the catapults working just in time. Sonic runs out to lure the Buzz-Bombers close enough to the catapults, and they are destroyed, along with Robotnik’s plans.

Key Moments

  • The pilot, directed by John Grusd rather than season director Dick Sebast. It is first on the DVDs but last by production code (238-213).
  • Sonic’s roboticized dog Muttski appears, and Sonic shows Tails his photo of Uncle Chuck and Muttski – the photo has its own model sheet in the Vault below.
  • The catapult defence and water balloons drive off Bomber-One and the Buzz Bomber squadron.
  • Robotnik’s robot bird Cluck and Snively’s remote-control prank feature in the opening scene.

Trivia

  • Aired eleventh, on 27 November 1993 – all three of our sources agree on that date. Its production code, 238-213, is the last of the season, which is why WildBrain’s official upload numbers it 113; Sonic Retro and the Shout! DVD set put the pilot first.
  • Sally appears in an earlier design here, with a shorter ponytail and different colouring (Sonic Retro). Our old SatAM FAQ put it simply: the original Sally was pink, and a pilot is the testing ground for looks and personalities.
  • The episode’s model sheets still call Rotor “Boomer”: see Boomer’s Backpack, Boomer’s Bib and Boomer’s Fish in the Vault below.
  • Released on NCircle’s 2009 DVD Sonic Goes Green with Sonic’s Nightmare, Sub-Sonic and Sonic Past Cool.
  • Luke’s original synopsis calls the attackers “Buzz-Bombers”: they are the wasp Badniks from the first Sonic the Hedgehog game (1991).
