Sonic and Sally is episode 3 of Season 1 of Sonic the Hedgehog, the ABC cartoon fans call SatAM, in the order of our original episode guide and the Shout! Factory DVDs. It was the third Season 1 episode to air, on 2 October 1993. It was written by Ben Hurst & Pat Allee and directed by Dick Sebast.
Synopsis
A raid on a SWATbot factory goes wrong. Bunnie cuts the power and Sonic plants the explosives, but a heat-seeking missile chases him out before they can be set off, and Sally is surrounded and captured. In Robotropolis, Robotnik and Snively build a robot duplicate of the princess, fitted with a memory board that copies her voice and manner perfectly.
Sonic “rescues” the duplicate and brings it home, unaware that it is reporting his every move to Robotnik. All of Knothole is fooled except Tails, who notices that the new Sally gets his special kiss wrong and cannot do the witch’s voice in his bedtime story. Nobody takes him seriously, and the impostor leads the Freedom Fighters towards a trap.
Sonic finally sees the truth, short-circuits the double and slips into the roboticizing chamber while Rotor and Bunnie’s explosives tear the factory apart. In the smoke he swaps the robot for the real Sally just in time, so Snively roboticizes the duplicate instead, and it promptly runs amok. Back in Knothole, Sally proves who she is to Tails with their “funny kiss” – and the witch’s voice.
During a mission against Robotnik with Sonic and Bunnie, Sally is captured and held prisoner in Robotropolis, while Robotnik switches her with an advanced robotic duplicate, with the intention of spying on the Freedom Fighters, roboticizing Princess Sally, and finding Knothole Village. While somewhat suspicious of the “new” Sally’s behaviour, most of the Freedom Fighters shrug it off as stress from her nearly being captured. Only Tails knows the truth, but will Sonic and the others believe him, and be able to save Princess Sally before she’s roboticized?
