A flashback shows a young Chris promising to be good while his parents go away, believing it will bring them home sooner. It never did. Now, having stopped Sonic from leaving, he runs off with him into the dark woods, and Sonic, oddly calm about being kidnapped by his best friend, goes along with it.

The next day they cross Station Square, borrow a bike and ride out towards the desert, hitch a lift on a truck, and pass a forest and a railway line they once travelled together. Mr. Tanaka and Topaz search the woods, Nelson and Lindsey send out helicopters, and Chuck warns that time is running out to send Sonic home before the worlds merge.

Their road ends at a cabin by a lake, where the Thorndykes used to holiday before work took over his parents’ lives. By the campfire Sonic says he will stay if Chris wants him to, and Chris finally admits he was lonely before Sonic came and is afraid of being lonely again. Sonic goes home, and when Nelson and Lindsey reach the cabin, they find their son on the dock – glad to see them.
