Picking up straight after Beginnings, this is the siblings’ training montage – with interruptions. Before they can even set off on the Oracle’s map, Sleet and Dingo are at the door. Sonic and Manic deal with a robot, Sonia locks a lovestruck Dingo in the basement, and the three slip away through the sewers (Sonia is not amused). When the map is lost, her photographic memory gets them there anyway.

Their first teacher, Gondar, is a mountain of muscle who lives in the forest. Under him Sonic works on speed, control and his spin attack, Sonia learns a spin of her own and martial arts, and Manic, who has no natural power, turns his drumsticks into throwing weapons. Even the forest pitches in, spitting sticky goo from giant flowers to drive off Sleet and Dingo’s ship.

A magic scroll then sends the trio to Thelonious, a monk in a floating temple, whose first test – a monster in a simulation – they fail badly. He blames their lack of teamwork, Sonic’s impatience above all, but when Sonia and Manic stick up for their brother, the monk sees the start of something. The lesson continues in Harmony or Something.

The Song: “Working Together in Harmony”

“Working Together in Harmony” is the lesson Thelonious is trying to teach, and one the siblings have not learned yet.
