Sonic reaches the cornfield in time to smash Funfun, though the doctor gets away with the yellow Chaos Emerald. Out at sea the military’s assault on his fortress is in full swing, and Knuckles makes a typically direct entrance, riding a missile fired from an air force jet onto the fortress wall.

Inside, Rouge, Topaz and the special forces reach the generator room, where Knuckles catches up with them. They set their demolition charges, but the doors seal with the timer running. Sonic and his friends fly in on the X-Tornado, and Sonic runs into Eggman’s new robot, E-18 Guerra-Hard – powered by two Chaos Emeralds – which hurls him around the room.

With minutes left, Sonic finds his second wind, smashes through Guerra-Hard and takes the cyan and yellow Emeralds, then uses their power to tear a path through the base, right through the generator room and its trapped prisoners. Everyone gets out as the charges blow, and in Station Square the crowds watching on TV finally hail Sonic as a hero.
