The anime opens with Sonic storming Dr. Eggman’s base by night, dodging its guns and a pack of giant E-12 Behemoth robots, while Tails and Amy fly in to help and Knuckles turns up in a sour mood. Inside, Eggman has wired all seven Chaos Emeralds into a machine, and when Sonic wrecks it the gems unleash Chaos Control – a blinding blast that throws Sonic, Eggman and their friends out of their own world.

Sonic lands in Station Square, a human city where a talking blue hedgehog is soon front-page news. The police call in their Speed Team and its star driver, Sam Speed, a man who has never lost a race – until Sonic leads him on a breakneck chase down the highway and leaves him standing.

The run ends at an unfinished overpass. Sonic sails out over the city lights, deciding this new world has its charms, and drops straight into a mansion’s swimming pool, where he sinks like a stone. The splash wakes the boy who lives there, Chris Thorndyke, who dives in, hauls him out – and gets a thank-you from a hedgehog.
