Season 2 arrived almost a year after Season 1 ended, made by the same French studio under its new name, Technicolor Animation Productions, and shown mostly on Boomerang rather than Cartoon Network. The jokes got sharper and the stories bigger: a four-part saga in a city in the clouds, alternate dimensions, robot doubles of the whole team and a two-part finale starring Shadow.

The writing room took in new names from the wider Sonic world. Ian Flynn and Evan Stanley, the team behind Archie’s Sonic Boom comic, wrote episodes, as did Ken Pontac and Warren Graff, writers of the Boom games, who brought D-Fekt over from Fire & Ice. Vector the Crocodile guest-starred, Eggman gained a robot mother and a fake brother, and the village finally got a name.

Quick Answers

How many episodes are in Sonic Boom Season 2?

52 eleven-minute episodes, numbered 53 to 104 overall. The season premiered on 29 October 2016 and ended on 11 November 2017.

Where did Season 2 air?

The premiere, “Tommy Thunder: Method Actor”, was on Cartoon Network. In November 2016 it was announced that the rest of the season would air on Boomerang, while Cartoon Network showed reruns. In France the season began on 8 April 2017.

Are there multi-part episodes?

Two stories run across several episodes: the four-part “Robots from the Sky” and the two-part finale, “Eggman: The Video Game”. A few others are linked, such as “Planes, Trains and Dude-Mobiles” and “Sticks and Amy’s Excellent Staycation”, which take place on the same weekend.

How does Season 2 connect to the games?

According to showrunner Bill Freiberger, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice takes place during the second season, and its robot D-Fekt joins the show in “Return to Beyond the Valley of the Cubots”.

Is there a Season 3?

No. A storyboard artist suggested in December 2016 that a third season would follow, but it was never confirmed, and the show ended with Season 2. Eggman’s last line in the finale is that there is always next season.

S02E01 Tommy Thunder: Method Actor

US premiere 29 October 2016 (Cartoon Network) · Written by Alan Denton & Greg Hahn

Happy villagers (Tommy Thunder: Method Actor)

Season 2 kicks off with a celebrity crisis. Action-film star Tommy Thunder is signing autographs at Meh Burger, and Sonic is the one villager who isn’t starstruck. Then Tommy watches him flatten Eggman’s Bee Bots with a stale baguette and wants to study him for his next role.

Sonic refuses, even when a melon carved into his likeness turns up as a bribe, but a fancy dinner in Meh Burger’s “VIP room” wins over his friends, and Amy talks him round. It’s a disaster. Tommy copies his every move, asks for a retake after the team ties up the Weasel Bandits, and lets Soar the Eagle credit him with the arrest. On Comedy Chimp’s talk show he inflates his exploits and dares Eggman to come and get him.

Eggman, watching between batches of muffins, obliges. Faced with real Badniks and the Obliterator Bot, Tommy crumbles and admits he is no hero (even his name is fake). Sonic saves him, then lets the star keep the credit when Soar hands him the microphone. His friends reward that maturity with a trip to Meh Burger, where Knuckles demands the VIP room and Dave insists there has never been one.

S02E02 Spacemageddonocalypse

US premiere 19 November 2016 (Boomerang) · Written by Joelle Sellner

Eggman wants the asteroid to hit (Spacemageddonocalypse)

For once, Eggman isn’t making it up: a giant asteroid really is about to hit the planet. He spots it from his Egg Rocket, hurries home to a secret jungle bunker and starts selling places inside. Tails confirms the danger through his “Tail-escope”, while a crisis meeting with Mayor Fink goes nowhere.

The fix comes from Sonic’s vanity: seeing him admire himself in a mirror inspires Tails’ Solar Convergence Device, a mirror rig that focuses sunlight into a beam to nudge the rock aside. Space junk scatters the beam, so someone must fly closer. Sonic gets Eggman’s rocket towed for illegal parking, but the team picks Knuckles as pilot. How often does Sonic get to save the world? According to Knuckles’ TV listings, about once a week.

Knuckles’ picture instructions turn out to be Tails’ grocery list, so he breaks the device, shatters the asteroid with a ground pound and rides Eggman’s satellite back to the rocket. Sonic gets his moment when the pieces keep falling, batting them away with Amy’s hammer. He counts 30. There were 31, and the one he missed is now blocking the entrance to Eggman’s bunker, with the doctor and his guests stuck inside.

S02E03 Nutwork

US premiere 26 November 2016 (Boomerang) · Written by Sam Freiberger

Sonic, Amy and Tails (Nutwork)

Sticks always knew the system was rigged, and a dry tap gives her proof, or at least a theory. The village’s water is vanishing, yet Soar the Eagle would rather film a scissor factory opening and Mayor Fink is busy clipping coupons. So Sticks becomes the news, swallowing her distrust of technology to let Tails turn her burrow into a pirate radio station.

Her call-in show names Eggman as the culprit, and a raid on his lair catches him on Tails’ camera, boasting he is siphoning the water to sell it back. Listeners flock in, and TV boss Dixon fires Soar to give Sticks her own show. Compromises follow: a “happy” story about Fink’s puppies, Eggman Industries as her sponsor, an Eggman hat and a ban on investigating him.

When the village brands her a sell-out, Sticks urges everyone to question what TV tells them and fight the power. They riot, which is not quite what she meant, until Sonic calms them. Then Eggman rolls up with a Mega Microwave Water Vaporizer, and the fired-up crowd tears it apart themselves. Sticks quits, Soar gets his job back, and her lecture on truth lasts him until his next puppy story.

S02E04 Alone Again, Unnaturally

US premiere 3 December 2016 (Boomerang) · Written by Benoit Grenier

Amy and Sticks ready for action (Alone Again, Unnaturally)

Never ask Tails to make you faster. A slingshot, rocket skates and a moving walkway have all ended in crashes by the time Tails straps Sonic into his Ultrasonic Speed Amplifier, a chest rig powered by “blast processing”. Sonic keeps yelling for more power until he vanishes, waking beside a smashed wall in an empty village.

He is out of phase with the world, stuck on a different plane of existence. Blaming Eggman, Sonic trashes the doctor’s lair, and Eggman, who can’t see him, decides the place is haunted, until his security camera shows the “ghost” is Sonic, leaving the village unguarded. Back home, Knuckles is sure Tails has disintegrated Sonic, but Tails works out what happened and makes faint contact.

Eggman’s Badniks attack as the link drops, so Amy and Sticks fight while Knuckles guards Tails. The way home needs the control panel on Sonic’s side, so Tails straps on a harness and crosses over, feeling queasy. Together they lack the speed until Sonic digs deeper and drags them both back. The team scraps every robot except one terrified Motobug, which bolts with Eggman chasing it, and a still-green Tails walks to Meh Burger while the others run.

S02E05 The Biggest Fan

US premiere 10 December 2016 (Boomerang) · Written by Doug Lieblich

The gang watches (The Biggest Fan)

Every hero wants fans, until one moves in. Sonic meets Mark the Tapir, his self-styled biggest fan, at Career Day, and can’t shake him. He drags his table over at Meh Burger, matches Sonic’s order down to the soda, and turns up at the post office offering to be his personal assistant. Amy smells trouble; Sonic sees a nice guy who will do the boring jobs.

For a while it’s a dream: outfits picked out, battle tips against Charlie, massages. Then Sonic offers his helper an afternoon of freedom. Mark, who wants every day with his hero, steers his scooter into a boulder, and Sonic wakes up in a body cast in a cabin plastered with Sonic photos, being force-fed pie and asked to act out fan fiction.

When Tails, Amy and Knuckles come looking, a log trap knocks them out and they wake up in casts too. Their breakout is a mess of tumbling plaster until Sonic’s cast cracks open and reveals the truth: nobody was ever hurt. The team breaks free, Sonic tapes Mark up and fires him, and when Beth the Shrew later asks for an autograph, he runs off screaming.

S02E06 Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Worse-er

US premiere 17 December 2016 (Boomerang) · Written by Ian Flynn

Eggman laughs (Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Worse-er)

Eggman loses again, then plants a seed: catching Sonic, he tells Tails, is harder than it looks. Before long the pals have a wager, and the forfeit is brutal: the loser croons a soppy ballad on karaoke night at Meh Burger. Amy, remembering a monkey-hat contest between Sonic and Knuckles, predicts trouble.

She’s right. Sonic breezes through a chili-dog cage, a hammock slingshot and a barrel trap, grading each attempt while the traps collect the wrong targets: Knuckles in a barrel, Amy under a homing boulder, Sticks in a bear trap. The doctor’s flying spy camera is watching, and he is happy to let Tails do the hard work.

Tails’ masterpiece plays on Sonic’s ego: a fake sulk on a frozen lake, a chili dog as a consolation prize and a cannon-fired bowling ball that cracks the ice under a hedgehog who can’t swim. Eggman swoops in, and Tails realises his friends are still stuck. He frees them in time, helped by Eggman’s minions bickering over “Hedge-cicle” versus “Hedge-cube”, and Knuckles hurls Sonic into the Eggmobile. Tails still ends up at the karaoke mic, though Sonic privately admits he probably lost. Best not to tell Tails.

S02E07 I Can Sea Sonic’s Fear from Here

US premiere 24 December 2016 (Boomerang) · Written by Natalys Raut-Sieuzac

Team Sonic stares (I Can Sea Sonic's Fear from Here)

Eggman has a new theory of defeat: he keeps losing because he always fights Sonic on dry land. So the next battle goes underwater. From a submerged Eggmobile he starts an eight-hour countdown on a Wave Machine that will flatten the village, knowing how much Sonic hates water.

Sonic stalls, but the team gets the truth out of him: he never learned to swim, having skipped lessons to avoid being teased by kids. Even in Tails’ hi-tech wetsuit he can’t go in, so Amy calls in a professional: Soar the Eagle. Soar’s first lesson sets her house on fire; his second is to row Sonic out and push him overboard.

Eggman’s Crab Bots outmatch Amy and Knuckles, a laser blast pins Sonic under coral, and a crab claw cuts his air hose. Sticks, without a wetsuit, swims down a replacement salvaged from Tails’ plane, and a revived Sonic reins in two Shark Bots with seaweed and rams them into the machine. Down it goes, aimed the wrong way, and the doctor washes up at home to find his lair flattened. Fear conquered? Not a bit, and Soar’s next step, a cup of water in the face, doesn’t help.

S02E08 In the Midnight Hour

US premiere 31 December 2016 (Boomerang) · Written by Paul Shriver

Amy, Knuckles and Tails (In the Midnight Hour)

For once, Sticks’ paranoia is spot on. Painting by moonlight, she spots Dreamcaster, a hooded robot, lurking at the village TV station, and the next night she catches him on air, crooning the village to sleep while insisting this is definitely not hypnosis. Tackling him only wrecks Comedy Chimp’s studio, and her friends blame lack of sleep.

Soon she’s under arrest, with Sonic himself snapping on the handcuffs. Alone in a cell, Sticks starts doubting her own worldview, until she sees the whole village shuffling past her window in a trance, Team Sonic included. The mastermind is Eggman, whose entranced workforce is building a Super Slumber Satellite to beam Dreamcaster’s signal around the world.

Sticks is immune for the simplest of reasons: she doesn’t own a TV. She lures a hypnotised Knuckles into punching through her cell wall, barely resists Dreamcaster’s attempt to put her under, and comes back with five tinfoil hats. One hat per teammate later, Sticks smashes Dreamcaster and the others bring down the satellite. Her friends’ excuse for doubting her? The robot made them say it. Do they think she’s crazy? The pause is suspiciously long.

S02E09 Multi-Tails

US premiere 7 January 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Marine & Cedric Lachenaud

Scene (Multi-Tails)

Tails’ new force field, the “Dome-pocalypse”, stops Eggman’s Bee Bots cold and wins him the Trophy of Valor, right up until Eggman tunnels in from below with a drill tank and Scorpion Bots. His shots ricochet inside the dome and wreck half the village, and Mayor Fink relabels the prize the Trophy of Shame.

Sonic tells the crowd nobody can expect one fox to think of everything, and Tails takes him literally. He climbs into his cloner to build a five-fox brain trust, and out come five Tails with a fifth of his brain power each. One punches a hole in Amy’s wall, one answers everything Sticks says with “Why?”, and one lounges in Sonic’s hammock. Trying to merge them only splits him further.

Knuckles herds most of the clones with the promise of a Fink-shaped cheese puff, but one wanders into Eggman’s lair mid-shower, and soon a pack of them are trashing the place. The horrified doctor joins the roundup, and nobody but him can work out how to reverse the cloner. Restored, Tails admits he really needed his friends, though one innocent “Why?” still gets him tackled by Sticks.

S02E10 Strike!

US premiere 14 January 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Marie Beardmore

Sonic and Amy (Strike!)

Orbot suggests impact grenades might have worked better, Eggman hears blame, and his two helpers are left to find their own way home. After paddling home on a raft, they are sent out for a hundred garden rocks, then told to take them back. Facing the trash compactor, and egged on by Amy, they down tools.

Eggman scoffs that the strike won’t last, until he drops a coffee mug and nobody is there to clean it up. Every robot he insults for botching the job joins the picket line, which soon gets catchier chants from Rhyme Bot. So Eggman holds a job fair and tempts Wolfie, Mike the Ox and Fastidious Beaver with outrageous pay.

Sonic and Amy rush to rescue the “kidnapped” villagers, only to find they signed up willingly. They make terrible minions anyway, questioning every order, proposing to vote on evil deeds and fleeing the moment Sonic glares at them. A tearful Eggman begs his robots to come back, and Amy brokers a deal: better care, better motor oil and use of the Eggmobile for water crossings (Orbot kindly drops the demand for respect). Amy’s reward? Paddling home on the raft.

S02E11 The Evil Dr. Orbot

US premiere 21 January 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Benoit Grenier

Sonic in battle (The Evil Dr. Orbot)

Crime is bankrupting the village, so Mayor Fink does the bureaucratic thing: villains now need a permit, which means passing an evil competency test. Eggman forgets his pencil, overthinks question one and fails, and faces a 90-day wait to retake it. His workaround: make Orbot the lair’s licensed villain and pull the strings himself.

Orbot downloads an evil textbook, aces the test and starts having ideas of his own. He steals Tails’ weather-control gadget his way, zaps his boss with lightning and fixes Eggman’s Fuzzy Puppy figurine problem with a slick market trick instead of senseless destruction. Tired of taking orders, he declares himself the Evil Dr. Orbot, and Cubot switches sides too, eager to back a winner for a change.

Orbot’s rampage ends when a heat-seeking missile blows up City Hall’s file of villain permits, which voids the law. Eggman swoops in to claim it was his plan all along, Cubot hits Orbot’s reset button to get his old friend back, and the pair go off to play charades. Sonic is almost impressed by the scheme, until Eggman admits he made it up on the spot, and Tails’ weather machine zaps him one last time.

S02E12 Knuck Knuck! Who’s Here?

US premiere 28 January 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Natalys Raut-Sieuzac

Sonic (Knuck Knuck! Who's Here?)

A Sonic-assisted launch into a boulder leaves Knuckles with amnesia. His friends’ cure, plus a scare from Sticks and a barbell to the head, brings his memory back with an odd side effect: for the first time he is thinking clearly, and he understands what being the last echidna really means. So he sets out to get himself adopted.

The applicants aren’t promising. Mrs. Vandersnout only wants someone to fetch and carry, and soon trades him in for Dave the Intern. The Gogoba Chief rejects him for being helpful, then guilt-trips him into moving a boulder anyway. Lady Walrus takes him on as the daughter she always wanted, dress and all, until he fights her son over a Meh Burger toy.

The family that finally says yes is Charlie and Belinda, who plan to use his loneliness to turn him evil. After a montage of kites and barbecues, Knuckles brushes off Sonic’s warnings and joins Charlie’s mech suit in an attack on his friends, until Charlie, using him as a human shield, snaps and admits that Knuckles is being used. Knuckles flips the mech, the villains flee, and Team Sonic shows him where his real family has been all along.

S02E13 Mech Suits Me

US premiere 4 February 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Alan Denton & Greg Hahn

Amy and Knuckles (Mech Suits Me)

A game of Jungle Predator leads Team Sonic into a cave covered in Ancient writing, where a mech suit lies under rubble. Its design is pure Sonic, and he is in the cockpit before Tails can mention safety tests. Lucky, really: Eggman has sealed them in behind a force field, and the suit punches through it, then makes scrap of Mega Bot.

The suit doesn’t stop at robots. Sonic nearly blasts a terrified Eggman before Amy snaps him out of it, and soon he turns into a jerk, jumping the Meh Burger queue, chatting up the twins Perci and Staci and wrecking a volleyball game. Blame the symbiont chip Tails spots in the blueprints, which bends the pilot to the suit’s will. Sonic storms off to partner with Eggman.

It lasts until Eggman tries to keep the suit for himself. Sonic chases him into the village, blasts the Eggmobile out of the sky and turns on Mayor Fink. Its shield blocks everything except while charging a full blast, so Sticks draws its fire while Amy flings Tails into the cockpit to pull the chip. Sonic remembers nothing, except the twins (only because he doesn’t like them, he hastily tells Amy).

S02E14 FiendBot

US premiere 11 February 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Alan Denton & Greg Hahn

Tails and Amy (FiendBot)

Eggman’s new robot has studied every Sonic battle on record, so FiendBot can predict the hedgehog’s banter, block his spin attack and knock him flat. But the footage taught it something Eggman never planned for. When Sonic breaks off the fight to save Perci from a falling tree and catch little Chumley, FiendBot decides Sonic is a hero, and a friend, and chases Eggman off with missiles.

Sonic renames his giant new buddy FriendBot, but the team isn’t convinced. Volleyball, a dance party and rounds of the rare game Tomatopotamus 2 (Knuckles has just taken Sonic’s crown) all end in FriendBot-sized wreckage. Eggman, for his part, concludes that his error was giving FiendBot a mind, so his next weapon, a cannon on treads, gets none.

When the blaster corners Sonic, FriendBot takes the shot and shuts down, which finally wins the others over. Repairs need Sparcium, a rare alloy, and the only supply to hand is the chip inside their Tomatopotamus 2 cartridge, so Knuckles’ high score is sacrificed. Too big for anyone’s house, the revived robot moves to the canyon to look after the Cubot prototypes, but not before Knuckles makes him remember who the champion is.

S02E15 Og Man Out

US premiere 18 February 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Ian Flynn

Eggman, Orbot and Cubot (Og Man Out)

Someone has raided Meh Burger, pinched bandages and left slime all over Amy’s couch, and the trail ends in her bathroom with Og, a Froglodyte who escaped through a tunnel left by Eggman’s Drill Bot. Og swears he comes in peace. Below ground he was a misfit, a vegan pacifist who questioned why everyone bowed to a giant statue, and he only took what he needed.

Suspecting a spy, Sonic insists on watching Og himself, and survives one night of his noisy bedtime routine. Og gets passed down the line: Tails gets a lecture on dangerous technology, and Knuckles, told violence isn’t the answer, waits a whole day for coconuts to fall and gives up seconds too soon. Og ends up with Sticks, who agrees with him about almost everything.

Then Froglodytes swarm the village, and the blame game begins: Sonic handed Og to Tails, Tails to Knuckles, Knuckles to Sticks. Sonic races to catch Og opening the old cave door in Sticks’ burrow, but it is still blocked; the invaders came up through the drill’s tunnel. Og, pacifist or not, takes them apart with martial arts, and decides to stay topside, in a home of his own.

S02E16 Knine-to-Five Knuckles

US premiere 25 February 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Benoit Grenier

Amy, Tails and Sticks (Knine-to-Five Knuckles)

Knuckles wins a lamp on Comedy Chimp’s show and suddenly has a problem: a lamp needs a home. T.W. Barker is happy to sell him one, a wreck with a hole in the roof, and once the contract is signed Knuckles learns that lamps also need electricity, which needs money, which needs a job.

The library is out (he can’t read) and a shop job ends in chaos, but ad-agency boss Diane sees his mess as art and hires him, to colleague Gunther’s disgust. When Barker and his Stunt Bears demand more cash and threaten to take the house, and the lamp, Knuckles quietly takes a second job at Meh Burger under Dave, and keeps it even after promising his friends he’d quit.

It all collides in one afternoon: the ad team celebrates at Meh Burger while Eggman attacks outside. Juggling three roles, Knuckles serves Eggman fries and hurls Gunther into a cup display, and both bosses fire him on the spot. Back at the house, Amy reads Barker’s contract, declares it a swindle and snarls him into releasing Knuckles from it. Knuckles loses the house but not the lamp, which gets a spot at Tails’ workshop.

S02E17 Blackout

US premiere 4 March 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Natalys Raut-Sieuzac

Sonic, Tails and Amy (Blackout)

The lights go out across the village halfway through Comedy Chimp’s show, and for once Sticks’ prime suspect has an alibi: Eggman needs electricity for his robots too. Then the mayor confesses. The village has always run on the Meroke Crystal, an Ancient relic handed down from mayor to mayor, and it has run dry. A replacement sits in a temple in the frozen wilds, and he has a map.

Blue Force One, it turns out, has a snowmobile mode (news to Amy), and the team reaches a sealed door whose riddle advises the lazy way in. Brute force gets nowhere and Tails reckons his puzzle will take centuries, so Knuckles opens the door by plonking himself down on a rock.

Inside, stone guardians set three more riddles with deadly forfeits: poison gas, a shrinking floor over spikes, a closing ring of guardians. Knuckles, of all people, cracks all three, two of them by accident, with “two sides”, “dust in the wind” and a shout for “silence”. Taking the crystal brings the temple down, but the team snowboards to safety and plugs it in, ending the riot back home. Sonic praises Knuckles’ brains, then takes it back.

S02E18 Unnamed Episode

US premiere 11 March 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Benoit Grenier

Sticks and Amy (Unnamed Episode)

A plan for souvenir T-shirts raises an awkward question: what is the Unnamed Village actually called? A web search by Tails turns up the answer: Badgerville, named for Jebediah Badger, a crooked banker and land grabber who evicted families until the locals drove him off. On a technicality the name still stands, and Jebediah was Sticks’ great-great-grandfather.

The village turns on Sticks overnight, and the renaming turns ugly. Amy’s suggestion, Pleasant Valley, has the crowd’s support until Eggman demands an election, wins it with free T-shirts and a smear campaign against Amy for being friends with Sticks, and renames the place Eggman City. A hidden clause hands him absolute power, and his first big project is bulldozing the town for a theme park.

The boys skip library duty, so Amy alone finds the loophole in the public records: Jebediah never gave up the land, so the whole village belongs to his latest descendant. Sticks, already packing to leave, hands power back to the people, then jams Eggman’s bulldozer into reverse with her staff. Offered Badgerville as an honour, she renames the place Hedgehog Village, not after Sonic, as he assumes, but after Amy.

S02E19 Robot Employees

US premiere 18 March 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Anne Baraou

Sonic and Lady Walrus (Robot Employees)

Eggman orders a chili dog at Meh Burger, gets a burger and decides the restaurant needs fixing. His pitch to owner Mr. Slate, a staff of efficient robot employees, goes down well, and Dave the Intern has to beat the machines at grilling, cleaning and taking orders to keep his job. He loses every round.

The village loves the new Meh Burger, apart from Sticks, who stalks off to forage in the woods. Dave’s Lightning Bolt Society plot to sabotage the grand re-opening collapses when the other members are tempted inside by free cheeseburgers. Then Eggman raises a toast, traps the restaurant and everyone in it inside a force field, turns the robots on Team Sonic and fires up thrusters that carry the whole building skyward.

That leaves the two robot haters to save the day. Talked through it by Tails, Sticks borrows his plane and recruits a reluctant Dave as co-pilot. In spacesuits, they knock out half the thrusters with her boomerang, and Sticks builds a blaster from parts grabbed at Tails’ workshop to break the force field. The villagers float down on tablecloth parachutes, Meh Burger crashes back into its own crater, and Mr. Slate makes Dave manager.

S02E20 Give Bees a Chance

US premiere 25 March 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Cindy Robinson

Amy won’t risk hurting Bea (Give Bees a Chance)

After foiling Eggman’s grab for the newly dug-up Fregosi Sapphire, Amy wonders what happens to all the Bee Bots she smashes. In the wreckage she finds one still buzzing, and Tails not only fixes it but gives it a personality chip. Amy names her new pet Bea and teaches her tricks, like fetching a hoop.

Eggman recognises his property and activates her homing device (once customer service helps him make it work). A hiding place in the Gogoba Village fails, Bea flies off to rejoin the swarm, and a heartbroken Amy won’t let her friends fight Bee Bots that might include her. Eggman exploits her hesitation, snatching the gem he plans to wire into an unbeatable Mega Bot.

The others can’t dent the powered-up robot, but a photo in Amy’s scrapbook gives her an idea. She turns up at the lair and throws the hoop, and Bea peels out of the swarm to fetch it. Mega Bot blasts Bea on Eggman’s orders, and a furious Amy hammers the gem right out of it, shutting the robot down. Rebuilt by Tails with a shard of the gem as her power source and a fresh coat of paint, Bea returns slightly stronger.

S02E21 Mombot

US premiere 1 April 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Joelle Sellner

Amy and Sticks (Mombot)

Eggman’s Eggs-Boson Super-configurator can conjure a miniature black hole or give broccoli the flavour of applesauce, and it still loses the children’s science fair to Beth the Shrew’s model of the solar system. The judges rule him too tall to enter, and Beth wins a week as apprentice to the village’s leading scientist, who turns out to be Tails. Watching Lady Walrus dote on her son, Eggman realises what he’s missing and builds Mombot, a robot mother programmed to love him unconditionally.

At first it’s bliss, complete with a montage. Then she suggests he give up villainy for air-conditioner repair, arranges a peace-making movie date with Sonic, invites Sonic, Amy and Sticks to dinner, spots his Mantis Bot ambush without turning round and sends him to his room. Meanwhile Tails and Knuckles compete for Beth’s attention, science against smashing, until she wanders off with Sticks to learn about mind-control headphones.

Humiliated, Eggman plans to wipe Mombot’s memory with a magnet, but when the moment comes he can’t do it and sends her on a round-the-world cruise instead. As she hugs him, he turns to the camera and asks, “Does it always have to end on a joke?”

S02E22 Muckfoot

US premiere 8 April 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Kevin Burke & Chris “Doc” Wyatt

Scene (Muckfoot)

Sticks swears a vine-covered beast called Muckfoot roams the jungle, and Tails scoffs until he spots one through his Tail-escope that night. A tripwire camera gets the proof, and soon the village is gripped by Muckfoot Mania, Tails is a celebrity and Tommy Thunder has him on a TV show, Muckfoot Hunters, where Tommy hits the beast with an electric arrow.

Then Knuckles appears, bandaged, with a mystery burn he blames on the moon. Sticks smells a connection, and a stakeout proves her right: the berries beside Knuckles’ new hammock make him sleepwalk, and a muddy stroll turns him into Muckfoot. Tails admits his mistake, then, faced with Muckfoot Day and a cheering crowd, tells everyone the monster is real.

T.W. Barker knows the truth too, and cages the sleepwalking Knuckles to take on tour, backed by Eggman, who has quit villainy to run away with the circus (and insists it has nothing to do with the clown make-up he’s been wearing all episode). Some of those berries, saved in Tails’ pouch, send the villains sleepwalking away, and he tells the village the truth at the cost of his fame. Nobody notices the real Muckfoot grabbing a souvenir hat.

S02E23 Nominatus Rising

US premiere 15 April 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Natalys Raut-Sieuzac

Tails and Amy (Nominatus Rising)

Tails’ upgraded Build-it Box can turn digital characters into real ones, shrunk by a file-size throttle, and its first test, a pint-sized Ms. Tomatopotamus, causes chaos until Knuckles’ gentle touch sends her to sleep. Watching from cyberspace is Nominatus, the virus that once turned on Eggman. While the team is out fighting Eggman, he uses the machine to step into the real world with his sidekicks, Retro and Beta.

The catch: they’re tiny too. Crossing Tails’ workshop to switch off the throttle becomes an epic trek, with a cat batting them about and a hawk Nominatus has to hijack to reach the laptop. Once he does, they’re full size, Ms. Tomatopotamus suddenly towers over Meh Burger, and the villains make off with the laptop and the Build-it Box.

Tails’ security footage shows three strangers, and the team blames Eggman until he sees the tape and recognises his old enemy. So hero and villain team up, Mantis and Scorpion Bots alongside Team Sonic against a horde of Caterpixels. Eggman blasts the laptop back into Tails’ hands, the throttle goes back on, and the shrunken villains end up in a terrarium in Eggman’s lair, while Knuckles keeps Ms. Tomatopotamus as a pet.

S02E24 Eggman’s Brother

US premiere 22 April 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Marine & Cedric Lachenaud

Team Sonic (Eggman's Brother)

Sonic’s habit of beating every robot before his friends get a turn is wearing thin when a stranger knocks at Eggman’s door: Steve Eggman, blond and claiming to be the doctor’s long-lost brother. Eggman throws him out. Steve promptly saves Sonic from Decimator Bot’s freeze ray, and Sonic signs him up for the team without asking anyone.

The others stay wary, even after Steve rescues Gogobas from a lava flow. Then the friendships start to crack. “Sticks” talks Knuckles into exile, “Tails” scares Sticks off with talk of a government watch list, “Amy” tells Sonic the team thinks he’s running it into the ground, and “Sonic” tells Tails they all need a break. Every one of them is Steve.

The truth: Steve is Morpho, a shapeshifter built by another universe’s Eggman, who destroyed that world, and wrecking Team Sonic was meant to win over this Eggman. With Sonic isolated, they attack, but Tails never believed Sonic would give up on his friends, and his digging finds Amy glued down in the forest. The team rides to the rescue, and Eggman is so taken with the absurdly convoluted scheme that he wishes Morpho really were his brother.

S02E25 Do Not Disturb

US premiere 29 April 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Peter Saisselin

Scene (Do Not Disturb)

Sonic’s alarm clock this morning is a drooling widabit, a rare species, and she has decided his shack is the perfect love nest. Fastidious Beaver of the Endangered Species Coalition evicts him, backed by co-chairman Amy, so Sonic moves in with Tails. Before long, Sonic’s clutter and practical jokes have Tails at the end of his rope.

Amy warns the ritual could take months, so Tails hurries romance along with a loudspeaker playing a mating call. The male that turns up can’t stand the female, a candlelit-restaurant makeover of the shack doesn’t help, and the roommates bicker over who ruined the mood. When Eggman attacks, a protected widabit wanders onto the battlefield and follows the fight wherever it moves.

Then the call works too well, and a stampede of males flattens Eggman. Fifty widabits can legally be relocated; Sonic counts 49, so Sticks sniffs out the last one in the forest, where Sonic and Tails finally laugh it off, agreeing that best friends needn’t be the best roommates. The 50th suitor wins the female over, but nesting takes a week, so Sonic stays at Tails’ place, and Knuckles, who has secretly been living under the porch, moves in too.

S02E26 Robots from the Sky: Part 1

US premiere 6 May 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Alan Denton & Greg Hahn and Bill Freiberger

Scene (Robots from the Sky: Part 1)

A charity car wash turns into yet another brawl with Eggman, who wrongly blames the team for raiding his change cup, and nobody notices a ship crash nearby. Out climb Mighton and Bolts, two robots who watch the team gleefully smashing other robots and draw the obvious conclusion: these are the villains. Bolts ties up the heroes with a detachable stretchy arm, and the newcomers leave with Eggman.

Their home turns out to be a city in the clouds with no overlord, which Eggman means to fix. But when he pours apple juice over Orbot and Cubot’s heads, his guests see what he is really like and try to leave, only to be pinned by ceiling magnets. Orbot and Cubot sneak off to fetch Team Sonic, while Sticks plans a sneak attack with a brick.

The team storms the lair, Tails cracks Eggman’s feeble password to free the prisoners, and Bolts gives the doctor a parting zap. Mighton apologises for the mix-up, Tails patches the malware-riddled ship, and Sonic quietly stops Sticks’ brick as the visitors fly home. Then red-eyed figures in the bushes open fire, Tails is hit, and the screen fades to black. Cue Knuckles grumbling about cliffhangers.

S02E27 Robots from the Sky: Part 2

US premiere 13 May 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Alan Denton & Greg Hahn and Bill Freiberger

Sonic and Tails on the plane (Robots from the Sky: Part 2)

Tails survives the cliffhanger thanks to a book in his strap, and the shooters turn out to be the Cubot prototypes, suddenly hostile. Pressing their self-destruct buttons stops them, and Tails finds the same malware that infected the visitors’ ship. At the lair, meanwhile, a mysterious signal makes Orbot and Cubot walk out on Eggman mid-bath, and every robot he owns follows.

The machines descend on the village, Orbot and Cubot included, insisting Eggman didn’t give their orders. Tails traces the malware to the city in the clouds, whose coordinates he copied from the ship, so he and Sonic fly off while Knuckles, Amy and Sticks hold the fort. Their hopes of help from FriendBot vanish when he turns up infected too.

The route is patrolled by sentry ships, and a dogfight follows, with Sonic leaping out to spin-attack one before Tails catches him in mid-air. With more sentries ahead, Tails swaps his plane for a downed sentry craft, which docks itself and carries them unchallenged into the city. What they find there is a ruin.

S02E28 Robots from the Sky: Part 3

US premiere 20 May 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Alan Denton & Greg Hahn and Bill Freiberger

Tails reads the map (Robots from the Sky: Part 3)

So much for stealth: Sonic trips an alarm within seconds, and the city’s hypnotised citizens chase him and Tails into a dead end, where Bolts’ stretchy arms yank them down a chute to the Robot Resistance, led by Mighton. Lead walls shield the rebels from the signal but keep them indoors, so the immune Sonic and Tails head for the Central Power Core.

Lost among identical streets, they let the guards capture them and deliver them there. The mastermind is Hypnobot, Tails’ old Robot Battle Royale entry, blasted into space and forgotten. Rescued and upgraded by the city’s robots, he gained a mind and a grudge, hypnotised his rescuers and turned the world’s robots against all living things. At home, Knuckles rallies the villagers to defend their stuff.

Tails can’t bring himself to shoot his own creation, and a fumbled shot holes the city’s dome. He tumbles out, his tails bound by a bola, and Sonic, his leg badly hurt, kicks Hypnobot over the edge and grabs his friend. Hypnobot’s plunge into a frozen lake breaks the spell everywhere, leaving Tails with the guilt and Eggman with a frozen new recruit to fish out of the ice.

S02E29 Robots from the Sky: Part 4

US premiere 27 May 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Alan Denton & Greg Hahn and Bill Freiberger

Scene (Robots from the Sky: Part 4)

Mission accomplished, Sonic wants to leave, until Amy calls and the robots tease him about a girlfriend, so he stays for the tour. Bad timing. Eggman has thawed Hypnobot, fitted him with a neck-mounted gun and bonded with him over their shared grudge, and the pair lead the re-hypnotised robots, Eggman’s included, on an invasion of the city in the clouds. Knuckles, Amy and Sticks follow by clinging to an entranced FriendBot.

The odds are hopeless, and when Hypnobot re-infects the citizens, Mighton included, the heroes retreat to the lead-lined bunker. Bolts’ answer: only organic brains are immune, so build more fighters that have them. After some persuading, Sticks lends her DNA too, and out comes Team Cybonic, cyborg copies of all five.

Side by side, heroes and doubles carve through the robot army, and Sticks warms to her twin. Then the hypnotised Mighton’s rocket punch catches Sonic’s injured leg, and Hypnobot orders a finishing blow. This time Tails doesn’t hesitate: he knocks his creation’s hypno-ray off with a wrench, and Mighton’s fist stops just short. Eggman flees, Team Cybonic stays on as the city’s guardians, the robots give their home a catchier name, and Tails flies everyone home.

S02E30 Flea-ing from Trouble

US premiere 3 June 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Marie Beardmore

Scene (Flea-ing from Trouble)

HugeBot loses, like every big robot before it, so Eggman thinks small: FleaBots, nanobots that turn the cleanest host into an itchy wreck. Orbot and Cubot plant them on each member of Team Sonic, firing them at Sonic over lunch, slipping them into Amy’s perfume, launching them at Knuckles mid-workout and dropping them through Sticks’ roof and Tails’ air vent.

Each hero tries to hide the scratching until Sticks cheerfully admits she has “fleas”, and the accusations fly. A trip for anti-itch lotion gets them quarantined in Tails’ house, where flea spray and a flea collar only make things worse, and with the team locked away, Eggman cleans out the village’s stock of Choco Num-num Bars, the snack whose price rise started all this.

Mayor Fink lifts the quarantine and wonders aloud whether these fleas are fleas at all. Under Tails’ microscope, they’re robots. A round of well-meant punches between friends squashes only two, so the team takes the fight to the lair, using Eggman’s Motobugs and Mantis Bots as scratching posts. Sonic knocks the controller loose, Tails reverses it, and the FleaBots jump ship to Eggman, who ends up in the bath while his minions pick him clean.

S02E31 Lightning Bowler Society

US premiere 10 June 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Peter Saisselin

The Lightning Bolts’ catapult (Lightning Bowler Society)

Eighty straight defeats, the latest involving rock-hard fruitcakes, convince the Lightning Bolt Society (Dave, Willy Walrus, the Tree Spy and a Weasel Bandit) that villainy isn’t their calling. Bowling, it turns out, is. As the Lightning Bowler Society they crush the One-Percenters, then Sonic’s team, the Pin Dashers, and the village falls in love.

Suddenly the Bolts have a Meh Burger tie-in and a slot on Comedy Chimp’s show, while sore loser Sonic drills his exhausted friends late into the night. The Tree Spy, now going by his real name, the Chameleon, starts dating Staci, who persuades him the others are holding him back. The row that follows ends in a slap fight: the Chameleon goes solo, and the rest drift into new jobs.

Sonic needs his rematch, so the team sets out to reunite the band, from Willy’s home-shopping show to Dave’s Meh Burger counter. It takes an Eggman attack to do the trick: watching Team Sonic battle the Mega, the old gang remembers how happy they were as trash-talking villains. They rejoin forces, get in the robot’s way so badly that the heroes win easily, and refuse the rematch. Sonic still won’t admit they’re better bowlers.

The 15-hour drive stretches. Knuckles needs a bathroom every few miles, and Tails wants to see every roadside oddity, from a ketchup-bottle water tower to a record-breaking non-rocking chair.

Sonic takes over and hits a speed trap. Knuckles takes over at night, chooses the road under a thunderstorm because it seems like a sign, and picks up a hitchhiking opossum who turns out to be the wanted Bike Chain Bandit. Sonic boots him out, only for the same trooper to find the bandit’s bag of bike chains in the van and jail all three.

His one call goes to Amy, who thinks he’s pranking her. Their cellmate Salty, a fan who calls them “Dreamboat Express”, distracts the trooper while Tails’ magnet grabs the keys. S02E33 Sticks and Amy’s Excellent Staycation

US premiere 24 June 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Alan Denton & Greg Hahn

Amy gets a massage (Sticks and Amy's Excellent Staycation)

With the boys away on their Dude-itude road trip, Amy plans a girls’ weekend and Sticks plans for an Eggman attack. Amy’s compromise is a decoy: a home-made Sonic doll on a pole (kept for strictly non-creepy reasons), which Eggman mistakes for the real thing and spends the day stalking, convinced Sonic is snubbing him.

Free of guard duty, the friends struggle to agree. Mud-clump hurling is too much for Amy, tea and knitting too sedate for Sticks, but the village spa suits both: a footbath for one, a mud soak for the other. Unfortunately Belinda is in the next seat when Sonic calls to moan about his trip, and now she knows the boys are away.

Eggman finally blows up the doll, realises he’s been had and storms the village, but the girls rout his robots with spa products, finishing with shampoo in his moustache. Then Belinda arrives in Charlie’s mech suit, trapping villagers in force fields over petty grudges. A knitted strap trips the suit and a table-turned-seesaw launches her home, where Charlie, who skipped the fight to fetch her anniversary present, hands her an Ancient flight harness. Charlie and Belinda are now officially a double act.

Eggman’s trash hasn’t been collected for weeks, and Mayor Fink, chasing votes in an election year, sends the binmen, then hits him with a fee he can’t pay and threatens foreclosure. Selling off gadgets, starting with the never-fired Doomsday Device, is Orbot’s idea. Eggman’s is far worse: Eggman Towers, a luxury resort in his own lair.

Team Sonic checks in to watch him, and the doctor grits his teeth through their every demand, while Sticks builds a fort out of stolen pillows. Just as the money arrives, Fink adds a hotel permit and a fine for running a hotel without one, wiping him out. Then word of a secret reviewer from Secret Review Magazine has Eggman fawning over the wrong guests: a heron who turns out to be an insurance adjuster, and a vacuum-cleaner salesman.

The real reviewer is Amy, and Eggman’s public meltdown ends with his old standby, a force field around everyone. Sticks, who skipped dinner, frees them, and in the brawl Sonic knocks a Scorpion Bot into the Doomsday Device. The hotel explodes, the guests land safely in the pillow fort, and the grateful heron’s insurance payout rebuilds the lair, rubbish problem and all.

Shopping at the DangerCo Deadly Equipment Warehouse requires a doctorate in Evil Science, and Eggman’s transcript reveals a scandal: he is two credits short. Staci overhears, and the gossip spreads through the village in a full musical number. By the time Eggman reaches Meh Burger he’s a laughing stock, “Mister Eggman” to everyone, Sonic included.

So he goes back to school, enrolling with Professor Kingsford, a notorious tutor who always picks one student to torment all semester. Oversleeping on day one makes Eggman that student. While Team Sonic, bored without a villain, fills the time with a montage of its own, Eggman flunks assignments, joins a study group with the Lightning Bolt Society and bungles a lab-day theft, which gets his whole class failed.

Needing an A in the final, he raids Kingsford’s desk by night for the answer sheet. They’re fakes planted by Kingsford, and every one is wrong, but in a class on evil, stealing the answers was the real test, and Eggman is the only one who passed. Dr. Eggman graduates to zero applause, and Sonic looks forward to some proper action next week.

S02E36 The Haunted Lair

US premiere 15 July 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Sandrine Joly

Scene (The Haunted Lair)

T.W. Barker’s Haunted Forest is the cheapest scare on the island, and it still sends Eggman screaming. Sonic and Tails fake a haunting at the library for laughs, then guiltily show him the forest’s sheets-on-ropes ghosts by daylight. Cured, Eggman goes home and meets a convincing ghost in his bedroom.

Barker has an explanation: haunted attractions upset the spirits, and, as Barker puts it, “ghosts are powerless against red tape”, so Eggman should sign over his lair and everything in it. He signs, then turns up with a hammer to build himself a new home beside Sonic’s shack. Horrified, Sonic takes him back to find Barker running the lair as a haunted attraction, its ghost nothing but a projection bounced off a mirror into smoke.

Eggman’s own robots, now Barker’s property, throw him out, though his rant tips off the villagers that the attraction is a sham. Worse, Barker proves a smarter tactician with the Badniks than Eggman ever was. Help comes from an unlikely place: Cubot plants an Anti-allegiance Virus that turns the robots on their new master, Barker tears up the contract, and Eggman, back in charge, squares up to Team Sonic as usual.

S02E37 Return of the Buddy Buddy Temple of Doom

US premiere 22 July 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Sam Freiberger

The Froglodytes hold the Gogobas captive (Return of the Buddy Buddy Temple of Doom)

Eggman wants a mech suit like Charlie’s, but his new MeBot, packed with weapons right down to power windows, dies the moment he switches it on. Amy politely declines to help, and Charlie lets slip the cure: the Tummel Crystal, a legendary power source in the catacombs under the Buddy Buddy Temple.

Underground, a magnetic pulse fries his robots, but the Froglodytes mistake him in his Eggmobile for a kingly centaur and pledge eternal service. His new subjects round up the Gogobas as slave labour. The Gogoba Chief guilt-trips Sonic, Tails and Amy into a rescue, which ends in a trap net and chains.

A spot of reverse psychology wins Amy her hammer back, the chains are history, and Sonic bumps Eggman from his seat to show the Froglodytes their “king” is a fraud. The crystal powers MeBot anyway, and Sonic summons his own mech suit for a giant-robot slugfest that ends with MeBot’s missiles exploding in its face and a dud self-destruct (Eggman blames the power windows). The Froglodytes bow to Sonic instead, and as the episode closes, Tails panics that there’s no final gag. Three cream pies fix that.

S02E38 Eggman’s Anti Gravity Ray

US premiere 29 July 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Marie Beardmore

Sonic in a spacesuit (Eggman's Anti Gravity Ray)

Eggman is sick of the Sunday breeze scattering his newspaper, so he builds an Anti Gravity Ray to rotate his lair out of the draught. Cubot decides it makes a sweet hat. It gets stuck on his head, Orbot snaps off the control knob, and Cubot becomes a floating gravity well, towing Orbot, Eggman and a cloud of robots to the village on the wind.

On the beach, Sonic bans Knuckles from digging tunnels, and Knuckles reveals a feminist streak. The airborne Cubot sweeps up towels, villagers and a cannon, and a jolt to his scrambled circuits gives him control of the ray and a new philosophy: everyone should drift up to the stars. Eggman leaves it to Sonic and goes to perfect his fries in Meh Burger’s empty kitchen.

Sonic and Tails chase Cubot skyward in spacesuits before his captives run out of air, and Orbot passes Sonic the knob. But Sonic sets the ray to reverse instead of off, pinning everyone to the ground. The fix is the very thing Sonic banned: Knuckles tunnels under the ray until it drops within reach, then smashes it. Eggman’s new answer to the wind? Robots pushing his lair round by hand.

S02E39 Victory

US premiere 5 August 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Sam Freiberger

Scene (Victory)

Mayor Fink is closing the village rec centre for lack of money, and after Team Sonic’s petition goes through his shredder, Eggman offers to buy it as his private playground. Village rules say ownership can only change hands through an athletic contest, so Sonic challenges him to soccer. Small snag for Eggman: none of his robots can play.

Only Team Sonic could beat Team Sonic, Orbot points out, so Eggman flies to the city in the clouds and gives Team Cybonic some wristband pedometers that are really mind-control devices. The cyborg doubles become Team “Eggman Is Awesome”, and when practice looks too even, a firmware update turns them into obnoxious high-school jocks. They win the practice game and spend the week taunting their originals.

The jocks lead at half-time, but Tails spots the flaw: the upgrade has left them too dim to cope with anything creative. So Team Sonic dances, juggles and showboats its way to victory, and Fink keeps the rec centre open (and closes the library instead). Eggman breaks his promise to release the cyborgs, but the heroes rip off the pedometers, and both teams end the day kicking the Eggmobile around.

S02E40 Three Men and My Baby!

US premiere 12 August 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Evan Stanley

Scene (Three Men and My Baby!)

Knuckles’ monster truck has a pizza oven, and that’s where the trouble starts: a juggled pizza, a swerve and a falling tree put Lady Walrus in bed for a few days. Guilt-ridden, Sonic signs the three of them up as babysitters for her son Chumley. Minding a baby should be easier than saving the world, right?

Very. Chumley won’t stop crying, a blender mix-up nearly ends badly, Amy refuses to help with nappies, and the boys end up changing him in spacesuits. A Dude-itude rock lullaby fails, Tails’ home-made mobile works, and then an Eggman attack wakes the baby. A furious Sonic tears into the robots, Chumley lands in Eggman’s arms, and his button-mashing switches off the Eggmobile and every robot.

Chumley, it turns out, loves gratuitous violence, and a happy montage of piggyback rides, swings and plane trips follows. Then the boys wake to an empty bed and search every dangerous spot in town before confessing to Lady Walrus, just as Chumley turns up on her roof. Lesson learned? Tails’ takeaway is purely practical: the pizza oven is now locked out unless the truck is parked. And a certain toy giraffe rides on its mirror.

S02E41 Where Have All the Sonics Gone?

US premiere 19 August 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Marine & Cedric Lachenaud

Amy shows Sonic the resistance (Where Have All the Sonics Gone?)

Mombot wants her “boys” to cooperate, so Eggman and Morpho team up, and Morpho’s portal box drops Sonic, mid-race with Knuckles, into a reality with no Sonic in it. The other half of the plan, Morpho posing as Sonic at home, falls apart fast: Amy sees through his sweet talk, and Meh Burger laughs at the “Sonic” who orders a salad.

In the other world, Knuckles is a fitness-TV celebrity, Lord Eggman rules the village from a throne carried by Gogobas, and talking back gets Sonic thrown in jail. A tough local Amy breaks him out and takes him to the Rebellion, led by a hard-nosed Sticks. Sonic insists they need the whole team, and Knuckles signs up after losing a race to Gourmet Burger and back.

The real surprise waits at Lord Eggman’s lair, where this world’s Tails builds robots as the tyrant’s eager sidekick. When Lord Eggman fires on the team regardless of Tails standing in the way, Sonic saves him, and the fox switches sides for the final blow. This Tails opens a portal home, where Sonic and his real friends pound Eggman and Morpho. Mombot, at least, is proud of the teamwork.

S02E42 If You Build It They Will Race

US premiere 26 August 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Jake James

Scene (If You Build It They Will Race)

A bigger Build-it Box means bigger toys, and everyone has a different dream car. Knuckles wants a monster truck, Amy a cute ride packed with weapons, Tails a jumper, Sticks a camouflaged buggy and Sonic simply speed. Naturally each driver thinks theirs is best, and Knuckles proposes a race to settle it.

Mayor Fink insists on a permit, which takes eight months. By Race Day the field includes Eggman, T.W. Barker, Dave and Leroy the Turtle, and it turns vicious at once: Eggman fires missiles and smoke bombs, Dave sneaks a shortcut, and Amy’s sabotage takes out both her car and Sticks’. Crash follows crash, and Sonic’s Speedster, all speed and no steering, eventually joins the pile-up.

Eggman stops short of the line to start celebrating early, and that pause is all Team Sonic needs. Realising they took it too seriously, the friends strip their own wrecks to rebuild the Speedster as a patchwork of all five cars. With a pedal-powered boost, Sonic wins by a whisker, and his trophy turns out to be a participation award, just like everyone else’s, Eggman’s included.

S02E43 Chain Letter

US premiere 2 September 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Peter Saisselin

FriendSpace (Chain Letter)

A chain letter warns Eggman of eternal bad luck unless he forwards it to three friends, and he has none. Orbot and Cubot follow him on FriendSpace, only to mock his remote-control mishap and send it trending, and the villagers are no better: Redd Heron has no internet, the Rabbit Girl says FriendSpace is over, and the Old Monkey has no idea what a friend request is.

Sonic says no as well, then changes his mind when Tails points out the spying opportunities. Big mistake. Sonic gets the chain letter, then an endless stream of shared posts that pings over lunch and in the middle of a scrap with T.W. Barker’s Stunt Bears, until he unfriends Eggman for good.

So Eggman launches his own social network, Scrambler, and bans Sonic. It flops until the Rabbit Girl decides it’s ultra-exclusive and brings three thousand friends. Soon the whole village chats online instead of in person, and a left-out Sonic begs to join, promising to comment on every post. Eggman lets him in, unfriends him for revenge, enjoys the rush so much that he deletes Scrambler, and settles for real-life enemies instead of friends.

S02E44 Vector Detector

US premiere 9 September 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Reid Harrison

Scene (Vector Detector)

Amy’s hammer has vanished, and without it she falls apart in a fight with Eggman’s Ball Bots. Her answer is to call in Vector the Crocodile, now the star of a reality detective show produced by Dixon, and Sonic tags along, sure he can crack it faster.

The clues lead everywhere. A Meh Burger VIP card proves worthless, since almost everyone has one. Hammer-shaped dents in Comedy Chimp’s vandalised studio point to Justin Beaver, whom the chimp had mocked on air, until a stakeout finds Justin at his nightly book club. Then a pie with a hole through its centre turns up in Amy’s garden, and a pie festival to catch the culprit flops, until Vector realises the pie was thrown in someone’s face.

That points to Wolf Sidekick, Comedy Chimp’s regular pie target, and the hammer turns up in his prop chest. Case closed, except Amy’s remark that nobody else owns a hammer like hers sets Vector thinking: why steal something so recognisable for a TV act? Over Dixon’s objections, Vector reopens the case with Sonic and unmasks the producer himself, who framed Justin for dumping him as manager, then Wolf. Nobody remembers to release Wolf.

S02E45 Three Minutes or Less

US premiere 30 September 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Freddie Gutierrez

Scene (Three Minutes or Less)

Meh Burger’s new delivery service promises 30 minutes or it’s free, and Team Sonic’s order turns up three hours late and cold. At a focus group the next day, Sonic boasts he could deliver in three minutes or less, and owner Mr. Slate, listening behind a one-way mirror, hires him. His wages? Chili dogs, one per successful run.

Sonic is a natural, despite delays like the Old Monkey hunting for the wallet in his own hand and a surprise candlelit dinner for two at Amy’s, which he wolfs down in a blur. Then Eggman sees Sonic’s TV ad and smells a free lunch. Fake complaints and a prank order to a made-up address get him nowhere, so he plans something bigger.

Three orders, three corners of the island and an ambush: Badniks outside Meh Burger, a guilt-tripping Gogoba Chief, Obliterator Bot holding hostages and Cubot stalling behind a bunker door. The last stop is Eggman’s own lair, ringed by robots, and Sonic slips in with a second to spare by following Orbot and Cubot through a secret tunnel. A bonus heap of chili dogs from the boss finally does what Eggman couldn’t: Sonic eats himself sick and quits.

S02E46 Lair on Lockdown

US premiere 7 October 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Françoise Gralewski

Sonic and Cubot (Lair on Lockdown)

Team Sonic storms Eggman’s lair to stop his overpriced online ticket business, and a stray Mantis Bot blade smacks into the control panel. The lair’s sorting system scatters everyone into different rooms, and Sonic’s random button-pressing adds a 48-hour lockdown that only a spoken password can lift. Radio signals can’t get through the walls.

So the odd couples make the best of it. Amy cleans the basement with Tails and finds a stash of Mootonium that has to be kept cool. Sticks won’t let Orbot near her, robots being robots, though together they find an air vent. Knuckles keeps a gloomy Eggman company in the storage room, where the doctor reminisces about his first robot, Zippie. Sonic and Cubot stumble on the password, “chili dog”, and promptly switch off the lights.

Then Sticks shuts down the air conditioning to crawl through the vents, and the Mootonium starts warming up. Zippie, who could only talk in Morse code, inspires the escape plan: tapping on the pipes. Messages pass from room to room, Cubot translates the override instructions, and everyone gets out before the lair blows up. Sticks makes peace with Orbot, and Knuckles hands Eggman a souvenir he rescued: Zippie.

S02E47 You and I Bee-come One

US premiere 14 October 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Benoit Grenier

Scene (You and I Bee-come One)

Off to a Villain Retreat, Eggman leaves a parting gift: his Bee Bots are networked to attack Team Sonic on sight, and Orbot and Cubot lack the clearance to call them off. The team traps most of the swarm in a cave, but one stray gets away, straight into the chamber of Tails’ new Matter Transporter during its first test.

Out steps a bee-fox cyborg. Reversing the process fails messily, but Tails’ new wings help rescue avalanche victims on the set of Tommy Thunder’s latest movie, and he starts enjoying the buzz. Then come the nightmares and the voices urging him to “join the hive”. Linked to the network, he frees the captured swarm and makes himself their leader.

Fighting back is no good, because Tails feels every Bee Bot that gets smashed, so Sonic fetches Eggman from his retreat. The doctor fixes the transporter, has Sonic lure Tails home dressed as a giant sunflower, and explains that smashing enough bees will weaken the link until Tails passes out. It works, the machine separates fox and bot, and Eggman admits the sunflower suit was only to humiliate Sonic. The team’s lesson: don’t turn into a bee.

S02E48 Don’t Make Me Angry

US premiere 21 October 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Benoit Grenier

Scene (Don't Make Me Angry)

Studying Team Sonic’s moves convinces Eggman he needs superpowers of his own, and a comic left at the library supplies the method: purple rays, which turned weakling Bruce Bandicoot into the Unenviable Clunk. Eggman’s purple ray does work, sort of. The side effect: any flash of temper transforms him into a tiny, adorable purple critter.

The cure is 48 hours without a transformation, which ought to be easy. Then Team Sonic laughs at him in the village, Sonic needles him into changing again, and everyone mocks him except Beth the Shrew and Amy. Eggman signs up for anger management, taught by Amy of all people, with meditation from Og, and soon not even the heroes’ teasing can ruffle him.

With 15 minutes to go, Beth drops by with home-made cookies (toothpaste instead of baking soda), then fiddles with the control panel and falls down the trash compactor chute, too narrow for Eggman or his robots. He can’t get angry on demand: Orbot’s insults are too sweet, Dave gets his order right, and Sonic apologises. That frustration finally does it, and Sonic rushes the furious fluffball back to save her. One spilt bowl of Cubot’s soup later, the countdown starts again.

S02E49 Eggman Family Vacation

US premiere 28 October 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Reid Harrison

Scene (Eggman Family Vacation)

After Eggman and Morpho bungle another attack and blame each other, Mombot packs the family off on a bonding holiday to her new timeshare in Roboken, the robots’ city in the clouds. Team Sonic, thrilled to be rid of him, gets a holiday of its own: Amy’s packed itinerary.

Robot cities aren’t built for humans. The timeshare is a dump, the massages hurt and the food is literally metal, while back home a stray Eggman missile, a giant snake and a cave of angry widabits leave the heroes wishing they’d stayed in. Then Eggman notices how clever Bolts is, and with Morpho’s help, posing first as Mighton and then as a monster plant, he steals Bolts’ Intelligence Chip.

Mighton and Cyborg Sonic chase the family’s Egg Rocket back to the island, where the chip makes Eggman’s robots suddenly smart: a Fire Bot with deadly aim, a Motobug pulling clever moves, each passing it on as the last is smashed. The trail ends when Mombot starts preaching non-violence. Rather than risk her, Eggman hands the chip back, and over dinner he declares he has learned to appreciate family. Dessert, sadly, is a pie made of metal nuts.

S02E50 Return to Beyond the Valley of the Cubots

US premiere 4 November 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Ken Pontac & Warren Graff

Tails and Sonic (Return to Beyond the Valley of the Cubots)

Tails’ little lab assistant D-Fekt can’t talk, which makes even a shopping trip a disaster, so Tails installs a voice chip. Able to speak at last, D-Fekt wants a life with meaning, but stints at the ice-cream stand and Knuckles’ gym go wrong thanks to his telekinetic powers, and his stand-up debut is wrecked by Eggman’s heckling.

Amy points out that Eggman treats all his rejects that way, which leads D-Fekt to the Cubot prototypes, who have lacked a guardian since FriendBot moved to the clouds. D-Fekt falls for Cutebot, takes the job and decides the best defence is attack. Next day he has conquered Eggman’s lair and turned the doctor into his servant, and Team Sonic thinks Eggman had it coming.

But when Sonic remarks that revenge is sweet, D-Fekt goes after everyone who ever wronged him, and the heroes have to fight him. Eggman escapes, borrows telekinesis from a D-Fekt prototype for a helmet and MeBot, and threatens Cutebot when the duel stalls. Sonic’s rescue gives D-Fekt the opening to rip MeBot to bits, and he departs with his Cubots and a warning: anyone who threatens them will answer to him. Hero or villain? Knuckles can’t decide.

S02E51 Eggman: The Video Game – Part 1

US premiere 11 November 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Jean-Christophe Derrien

Scene (Eggman: The Video Game – Part 1)

Mud splashed, robots smashed, jeers from the crowd: Eggman decides he has an image problem. Inspired by Tommy Thunder’s new video game, he makes one starring himself, ‘Stache Smash, and when Tails and Knuckles call it old-fashioned, he starts on a motion-capture sequel, Super ‘Stache Smash.

Spy Bots film Team Sonic in battle and Eggman performing his own clumsy stunts, which are too embarrassing to use. Orbot’s suggestion is a fighter who would make anyone look good: Shadow. Still sore about their last partnership, Shadow says no, so Eggman lures Sonic into an on-camera chat and cuts it into crude trash talk about Shadow. It’s a botched edit job, yet it works: Shadow is out for revenge.

With Spy Bots filming every angle, Shadow tears through Team Sonic. He teleports so that Knuckles’ punch lands on Tails, flattens Knuckles, and throws Amy and Sticks to the ground. Amy calls Sonic with her last strength. He arrives to find his friends beaten, and a single charge from Shadow smashes him through a row of trees. Cut to black, with Shadow looming over his rival.

S02E52 Eggman: The Video Game – Part 2: The End of the World

US premiere 11 November 2017 (Boomerang) · Written by Natalys Raut-Sieuzac

Scene (Eggman: The Video Game – Part 2: The End of the World)

Sonic talks his way out of the finishing blow, and as the rematch rages Eggman flies home with his footage, so he misses Sonic and Shadow working out that the trash talk was a fake. Shadow comes for the doctor, Orbot and Cubot are reduced to talking heads, and Eggman flees to Mombot’s house with a desperate plan: let another Eggman take the fall.

Using Morpho’s portal device, he swaps places with Lord Eggman, who heads straight for Sonic, laser sword drawn. Shadow and Sonic end up in the other world facing a Metal Sonic upgraded with the stolen game data, and the battle spills back home, where the whole team pins the robot down until Sticks’ staff takes it offline.

Then Shadow reveals the real threat. Both Eggmen are now his prisoners, stashed side by side, and since two versions of one person can’t share a dimension for long, the universe is doomed. As storms gather, Tails repairs Metal Sonic, whose homing beacon leads Sonic to the bound doctors, and one kick sends Lord Eggman home just in time. Shadow vows a rematch. Lightning has wiped Eggman’s precious footage, but he isn’t worried: “Well, there’s always next season.”

Broadcast & Air Dates

Season 2 opened on Cartoon Network on Saturday 29 October 2016 with “Tommy Thunder: Method Actor”. On 10 November 2016 it was announced that the rest of the season would premiere on Boomerang, Cartoon Network’s smaller sister channel, and from 19 November new episodes aired there, mostly on Saturdays, through to the finale on 11 November 2017.

The move shows in the ratings. The premiere drew 0.56 million US viewers by the Nielsen figures listed on Wikipedia; on Boomerang, episodes drew between about 0.08 and 0.19 million, and Wikipedia lists no figures for most of the second half.

In France the season started on 8 April 2017, and French viewers saw many episodes first: all four parts of “Robots from the Sky” aired there on 9 April 2017, a month before the US, and the two-part finale on 29 September 2017. Our French dates come from Luke’s original list and agree with Sonic Retro; Wikipedia’s list instead gives a weekly run from April 2017 to March 2018, which we have not been able to confirm.

Season 2 Trivia

  • The writers of the Archie comic joined the show: Ian Flynn wrote “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Worse-er” and “Og Man Out”, and artist Evan Stanley wrote “Three Men and My Baby!”.
  • Ken Pontac and Warren Graff, the writers of Rise of Lyric and Fire & Ice, wrote “Return to Beyond the Valley of the Cubots”, which gives Fire & Ice’s robot D-Fekt a voice.
  • Alan Denton and Greg Hahn wrote or co-wrote nine Season 2 episodes, more than anyone else, including all four parts of “Robots from the Sky” with Bill Freiberger.
  • The village is nameless for a season and a half. “Unnamed Episode” reveals that it was once Badgerville, after Sticks’ villainous ancestor, and ends with Sticks renaming it Hedgehog Village, after Amy.
  • Polygon singled out the scene in “Eggman’s Anti Gravity Ray” where Knuckles declares himself a feminist.
  • The fourth wall takes a beating all season: Knuckles reads Sonic’s schedule from the TV listings, Sticks tells viewers to keep watching, Eggman asks if everything must end on a joke, Sonic accuses the writers of phoning it in, and the series ends with Eggman promising a next season that never came.
