The Last Resort is episode 9 of Sonic Underground, DiC’s 1999 cartoon about Sonic, Sonia and Manic, the hedgehog triplets of Queen Aleena. It is number 9 in production order – the order TF1 first showed the series in France, where it premiered on 3 February 1999 – and it was the ninth episode to air in the United States, on 9 September 1999. It was written by Michael Edens, and its song is “Listen to Your Heart”.
Synopsis
After escaping an ambush in an abandoned factory, where they were hunting for the Royal Seal of Mobius, the siblings drive into the hills and find Lake Valley Resort, a green haven untouched by Robotnik’s pollution. Its leader, Stripes, gives them a warm welcome and takes a particular shine to Sonia.
Sonic is suspicious, and he is right to be: the valley survives by keeping Robotnik happy. Stripes reports his guests to the dictator but mentions only Sonic and Manic, leaving Sonia out. When Manic lets slip that they are with the Resistance, the townsfolk turn on him. Stripes tells Sonia that dealing with Robotnik is the only way to survive; she disagrees, and tells him so in song.
Robotnik decides he doesn’t need Stripes any more and sends Sleet, Dingo and a fleet of machines to roboticize the whole valley. Sonia refuses to run, the siblings save Stripes, and the villagers fight back. When the hedgehogs leave, Stripes and his people have joined the Resistance. He asks Sonia to stay and fight beside him, but she chooses her brothers.
The Song: “Listen to Your Heart”
Sonia takes the lead on “Listen to Your Heart”, singing to Stripes about choosing what is right over what is safe.
