Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie
Originally a 2 part Japanese anime.

Information on all of the main characters in the Sonic Anime.

 Sonic the Hedgehog:
The main character of the anime, Sonic usually just wants to relax and hang out. But when he is pushed, he will do whatever it takes to stop those doing evil, while showing alot of attitude in the process. Sonic is considered the fastest creature alive, his side kick being Tails, which their main goal is to protect the Land of the Sky from the likes of Dr. Eggman.

Miles "Tails" Prower:
Tails is Sonic's side kick, his scientific knowledge rivals that of Dr. Eggman, inventing different items of use. Tails uses his two tails to propell himself and keep up with Sonic's speed, and he also fears thunder.

Knuckles the Echidna:Sonic the Hedgehog the Movie
Treasure hunter of sorts, Knuckles is considered a close friend to Sonic. In the anime he is considered Sonic's "Best Friend", his abilities let him dig, glide, and punch very hard.

Dr. Eggman:
Also known as Dr. Robotnik, he is the ruler of the Land of Darkness (robotropolis), as well as Sonic's enemy. Dr. Eggman is a inventor of robots and different machines, including Metal Sonic. Dr. Eggman's goofy personality is usually the laugh of the party, often being made fun of by Sonic and Tails. He also seems to have deep affection for the President's daughter, Sara.

The President's daughter, Sara is a girl with much attitude and temper. The object of Dr. Eggman's affection, she seems to have more feelings toward Sonic then anyone.

Hyper Metal Sonic:
The robotic metal version of Sonic, using Sonic's own DNA to fuel his robotic body. Metal Sonic seems to think he himself is the real Sonic the Hedgehog, which his mission is to destroy the whole planet. But the question is, does this metal hedgehog have any real emotion, or is he just a mindless killing machine?

Metal Robotnik:
He seemed to take over the Land of Darkness and send Dr. Eggman away, a metal version of Dr. Eggman it seems. But is he really a metal version of Dr. Eggman or just another one of Eggman's schemes?

Old Man Owl:
The very old and senile, near-sighted owl who tries his best to help Sonic and friends. He says he once was a great pilot, but that was probably a very long time ago.

The President:
The leader of the Land of the Sky and the father of Sara, he usually asks for Sonic's help when in trouble.

----- Summary
Most know it as the Sonic Anime or the Sonic OVA, originally released in Japan around 1996 as a two-part 30 minute episode mini-series. Later on September 7, 1999, it was dubbed by ADV Films and released in America as a 60-minute movie, known as Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie.

The movie is a alternate continuity to the Sonic the Hedgehog video games and is not considered canon, though the storyline and characters are very close to the official storylines. The anime/movie also feature the four major characters of the Sonic series, which features Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Dr. Eggman (Robotnik). The new characters featured in this anime mini-series are The President, The President's daughter Sara, and Old Man (A Owl).

The planet that Sonic and friends appears on is known as Planet Freedom, which consists of two different divided regions, the Land of the Sky (the good side), and the Land of Darkness (the bad side). In reference to the Sonic video games, part of the Land of the Sky is known as South Island. This divided planet seems to be almost a futuristic alternate-future to planet Earth, which the city-ruins in the Land of Darkness appear to be that of New York City or another major city. That former major city appears to be ancient ruins in the story.

The beginning of the story features Sonic relaxing (just like he would in Sonic Adventure in Station Square at the beginning), listening to music in a beach chair until he is interrupted by Tails. Sonic's personality in the anime/movie is alot more like the Sonic the Comic personality, he is still a hero, but yet very immature and self-centered. Tails asks Sonic if he would like to test out his new Jet-propelled bodyboard, which Sonic quickly declines the offer. The relationship between Sonic and his friends is very much different as well, but this is of course caused by the slightly more selfish side of his personality, which changes during the anime.

Tails' bodyboard encounters a ship that is being flown by Oji-San (Old Man), a very old owl, which almost sends him off a cliff. Sonic of course comes to the rescue of both Tails and the Old Man, while Tails yells for help. Old Man then tells Sonic about the President, being held captive by Dr. Eggman. Which Sonic and Tails quickly run to the Presidental Palace, where they find Dr. Eggman holding the President and his daughter Sara captive. Dr. Eggman explains to Sonic that his city in the Land of Darkness (Robotropolis) has been taken over by a metal version of himself, called Metal Robotnik. Metal Robotnik had supposedly sabotaged the Robot Generator by overloading it with energy, which in malfunctioned it and released a excess of electricity that would destroy Planet Freedom in two hours or less.

Sonic decides to trust Dr. Eggman this time, while Tails receives a navigational watch from the doctor to help them on their way to finding the Land of Darkness. Sara takes a ride with Dr. Eggman in his shop, as Sonic and Tails enter the Land of Darkness. They both encounter many badniks as they enter the abandoned city, which looks alot like a large city of our time, but now being just a mass of ruins. While there they battle Metal Robotnik, as the skies lightning and thunder above them, scaring Tails in the process. The battle continues until Knuckles appears (wearing a Indiana Jones inpsired hat) and helps them destroy it. Once together, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles go to the core of the city. Sonic gets trapped in a glass container which then copies his DNA, while the bomb that threatened to blow up the Land of the Sky was supposedly a dud.

Metal Robotnik had then appeared and crumbled to pieces, revealing that Eggman and Sara had been it it. Which then has Knuckles accusing her of being behind it with Eggman, which afterwards she cries and explains that Dr. Eggman was behind it all. Dr. Eggman then reveals his master scheme, Hyper Metal Sonic, a metal robotic version of Sonic, which explains the DNA copying from before. Metal Sonic is a complete copy of Sonic in every way and even thinks he is the real Sonic. The fight begins between both Sonic and his Metal version, which Metal Sonic wins and sends Sonic falling from the sky. Tails discovers that Metal Sonic plans to destroy Planet Freedom by hitting the Ice Caps and blowing the entire planet up.

Sonic wakes up in the Green Lake City, which he then runs to the workshop and hears about the Ice Cap problem from the Pesident. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles then head out to the Ice Cap, where Sara is being held captive by Dr. Eggman in a forced marriage at the North Pole. It seems Dr. Eggman's scheme and main goal was to destroy the planet and leave only himself and Sara. His plan was to have children with her and be the only ones left. Sonic and Metal Sonic then engage in a long final fight between each other, which Tails then corrupts Metal's data with the navigational watch that Dr. Eggman had given him before. Sonic then takes advantage of Metal Sonic's weakness and begins to put some serious damage on him.

The President's ship is then destroyed, which soon after Metal Sonic saves the President and reveals he does have emotion, considering he is a copy of Sonic. Metal Sonic then gets blown up and starts to slide down towards a pit of lava magma, which Sonic runs to his rescue. Sonic tries to grab onto Metal Sonic as Metal says,There is only one Sonic..." and disapears into the lava as Sonic looks in sadness. Dr. Eggman then tries to escape with Sonic's DNA as he reveals his plans to make a more superior Metal Sonic without emotion. The design of his robot turtle then blows up the copy of the DNA in CD form, destroying any further plans of Dr. Eggman. The ending has Knuckles hitting Sonic in the head and chasing after him, accusing him of stepping on him during battle. Knuckles screams at Sonic as Sonic outruns him in the ending scene of the movie.

----- Trivia

Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie was edited for age-appropriate issues when it hit America, since the anime was originally aimed at older teenagers. Some censorship concerns were mostly translating some Japanese profanities to English, but one was of Sonic using his middle finger at Metal Robotnik, which ADV changed this to Sonic holding his index-finger up. Scenes that were not censored are as follows:
Sara shouting at Metal Sonic and calling him a "pervert" for looking up her dress by accident.
Tails accidently falling onto Sara's breasts and holding on with his hands.
Sonic hurting his groin.
Tails seems to be slapping his butt at Metal Robotnik in one scene.

Knuckles the Mole and flyer:
In the original translations, Knuckles was considered a mole, instead of a Echidna. During the anime there are several referances to this, Sara sometimes referred to him as "Mr. Mole", Knuckles is also later avoiding being hit by Sonic in similar fashion to the Whack-a-mole game. Also was stated that Knuckles was a "Accomplished Flyer", which in truth, Knuckles can only glide. The mistakes also appear on the DVD characters Bios section.
Wiki Source Information & Images.

Sonic CD Movies:
Sonic is animated in the same way that he is in the Sonic CD (SEGA CD) intro and ending movies.

Knuckles' Hat, Treasure Hunter
Knuckles is considered a treasure-hunter in the anime, while in the official game storyline he is a guardian to the Master Emerald. He also wears a hat, almost inspired by Indiana Jones, which he never wears in the games.
